NRIs can now cast votes in India via e-postal ballot#

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday allowed Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to vote from abroad through a proxy or e-postal ballot system.

Till now, only a miniscule number came to India to vote, given the expense and time involved.

This landmark direction by the apex court has the potential to alter electoral mathematics, as the NRI population is 25-million strong, the second largest diaspora after the overseas Chinese.

In e-voting, a blank postal ballot paper is emailed to the voter, who has to fill it and post it to their constituency.
